Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army's unlikely victory over superior French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Under the leadership of Mexican General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín, the ill equipped Mexican army of 4,000 overpowered the 8,000 strong French army, which had been undefeated for almost 50 years. It was a significant morale boost that unified the Mexican people at the time and, 149 years later, is still celebrated by Mexicans via a sense of national unity, patriotism and tequila.
